Field Care

If possible retrieve the bird yourself to prevent farther damage.

Keep the bird in a cool dry shady place. Don't leave the bird in direct sunlight. Heat increases decaying and bacterial growth.

Carry the bird by the feet not the neck. Holding the bird on the neck might cause feather loss.

Don't gut or skin the bird.

Don't place the bird inside a plastic bag. Instead, use a stocking to hold your bird. Fold the head under one wing and fold the feet against the body and insert the bird into the stocking. This will prevent breaking the feathers, keep the bird aired and cool at the same time

How To Select A Quality Specimen

Choose a mature bird with full feathers that has bright colors.

Check for pinfeathers. These are newly growth feathers with soft shafts and will fall out during the mounting process.

Check for feather loss on the head and neck. Choose one that is full feathered.

Don't worry about:

-Blood-----------------------------------This will be removed when we washed the skin before mounting.

-Broken legs, wings, feathers-----may or may not be a problem depending on your chosen pose for the mount.

-Damaged bills------------------------Not a problem. An artificial head will be used.

How To Store Your Specimen

Supplies needed: several plastic bags (grocery bags or trash bags), permanent marker, and masking tape.

Fold the head under one wing and fold the feet against the body (if the bird is in the stocking, leave it in the stocking and then proceed with the following). Place the bird into the bottom of the plastic bag and roll it tightly forcing all air in the bag. Be careful not to bend or break any feathers.

Take another plastic bag and do the same thing. Forcing the air out and double bagging the bird decrease the chance of freezer burn.

Secure the plastic bag with the masking tape and label it:  type of bird, sex, date.

Place the packaged bird in the freezer immediately. Do not use a frost-free freezer to store the bird. This has a dry environment and will cause freezer-burn quicker than a manual defrost freezer.
